To everyone’s surprise, a 500-year-old painting, believed to be, by Leonardo da Vinci sold for $450.3 million on Wednesday in New York. In other words, this created a new world record for the most expensive work of art sold at auction. The buyer's name was not disclosed.
The piece – Salvator Mundi depicts Jesus Christ and the price is more than doubled the previous record of Pablo Picasso’s – The Women of Algiers (Version O). This was sold for $179.4 million in New York in 2015.
Reports say that the painting is one of the fewer than 20 Leonardo da Vinci paintings.
