Twenty five years of CPM rule in Tripura has been checked by BJP’s resounding victory in the polls. The party has been able to achieve a clear majority in Tripura. Assam and Manipur are already in BJP’s kitty. With the addition of Tripura and Nagaland, BJP’s presence in the northeast has been strengthened. A look at the rise of BJP through the years.
In 1991, BJP was in power in four states – Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. The Congress party held sway over 12 states. By the time Modi came to power in 2014, the BJP had governments in 11 states, while the Congress had just 9 states in hand. The mergers with local and regional parties started at this point.
By the end of 2017, Congress had 6 states, while the BJP had 17. With the victory in Tripura and ongoing efforts to come to power in Nagaland and Meghalaya, only Karnataka, Punjab and Mizoram are left in the Congress party’s kitty. It truly looks like we are heading towards a ‘Congress-mukt Bharat’.
