If you were a kid of the late 1980s and 90s, you would have been in complete awe of the stretchable liquid man. But, now, with the advancement of technology, it’s no longer a myth. The researchers have developed a stretchable Terminator-style liquid metal that can revolutionize soft robotics.

According to the researchers, experimental liquid metals such as gallium and other alloys, when supplemented with nickel or iron, can bend and turn into shapes by means of magnets, like the iconic film villain T-1000 from The Terminator 2: The Day of the judgment. ”

While other such metals have been developed, they claim to have two main disadvantages.

Researchers claim that experimental liquid metals such as gallium and other alloys, when supplemented with nickel or iron, can be bent and shaped into molds by magnets.

New material discovered by the American Chemical Society solves great problems encountered by similar substances.

On the one hand, it may extend vertically, unlike previous versions.

Second, the substance can be manipulated out of the water by means of magnets.

This can be used in soft robotics.

First, the previous substances can stretch only horizontally due to their high surface tension, which makes them very limited in terms of mobility.

Secondly, the previous substances can only be manipulated when fully immersed in water.

If they are removed from the liquid, the substances become a paste, the researchers say.

However, new developments have made progress in addressing these two issues.

By adding iron and nickel to gallium as well as a tin alloy submerged in hydrochloric acid, the researchers claim they are able to drastically reduce surface tension and subsequently stretch the material up to four times longer than the rest.

The material – tested while immersed in liquid – also shows conductivity by connecting two electrodes and illuminating an LED bulb.

Researchers have found that the metal has undergone another obstacle; it has been able to connect to an electrode located vertically over the metal outside the water without becoming a paste.

Although the demo is quite a way to fully mimic the films published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces says their discovery could be the first step.

And it will eventually lead to dynamically reconfigured intelligent and biomimetic soft robots in the future.
